For the first two shows we travelled to the mighty St Lawrence Seaway in up state New York. The river here forms the border between USA and Canada and the easiest flight is into Ottowa or Montreal and then you drive back into the States over a very impressive bridge. It takes about an hour.
Our visit was in June 2006 and organised by Angling International. We fished the river for a total of 3 days around the Massena and Waddington regions where it is literally loaded with carp, and whilst we have a fair amount of experience on the river a guide is always a good idea to keep you in touch with where the carp are likely to be as hotspots vary according to the seasons. You can use two rods on a national permit and fish virtually anywhere along the river including nights if you want to, but we chose to stay at the Riverview Lodge in Waddington and they looked after us royally. In addition to accommodation they offer tackle hire and a guiding service should you need it.
The St Lawrence is particularly suited to anglers that like a lot of action with fish in the 18 to 35lb range being the average size. Some 40s are present but are hard to catch because of the sheer number of smaller fish. This is the perfect trip to take a wife / girlfriend along as there is no language barrier, the fishing is fast and easy so you don’t need to spend hours at it, and you stay in hotels rather than on the bank.
